Introducing the Jack Reed Jazz Quartet

When we think of classic Hollywood, the rhythmic sounds of jazz served as the heartbeat of cinema. The Jazz Age turned every smoky club, dramatic chase sequence, and sweeping romance into movie magic. Jazz didn’t simply support the scene—it shaped it.  

That's why we couldn't be more excited to welcome the Jack Reed Jazz Quartet as our featured entertainment for this year's Moonlight in Madison event. Led by drummer and bandleader Jack Reed, the quartet brings together some of southeastern Wisconsin's finest professional musicians. Before they take the stage, we sat down with the band to learn how they came together, who influenced their sound, and what guests can expect from their performance.  

TT: How did the band come together? 

JRJQ: The band came together naturally over the last decade. Guitarist Patrick VanBibber and Jack Reed grew up together and have been playing music for over 15 years. Once Brendan Demet joined, it naturally evolved into a full band. Adding our singer, Fiona, last year was the icing on the cake! 

TT: Who are some of your biggest musical influences? 

JRJQ: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Jerry Garcia, Herbie Hancock, and Ornette Coleman. 

TT: What's the best advice another musician ever gave you? 

JRJQ: "Shut up and play!" 

TT: What's one song you wish you could hear again for the very first time? 

JRJQ: "Run for the Roses" by Jerry Garcia. 

TT: What's your favorite part about performing live? 

JRJQ: Feeling free and completely in the moment. When you're playing live, nothing else matters except what's happening right then and there. 

JRJQ: What's your secret to filling the dance floor? 

Sing-along dance songs that everybody knows the lyrics to! 

TT: What can attendees expect from your performance at our event? 

JRJQ: A wide range of music with something for everybody. Whether it's Michael Jackson or classic jazz standards, there's always something that will catch your ear. 

TT: The theme of our event is Hollywood and epic movies. In your opinion, which movie soundtrack deserves more recognition? 

JRJQ: Crossroads

TT: What's your favorite event you've ever played? And what are some upcoming gigs you're looking forward to? 

JRJQ: Really, any outdoor street festival. They're a classic part of Milwaukee summers and are always so much fun to play!
